About
John Gusty – Father, Husband, Conservative American
Ever since my early teens, I’ve been attracted to swimming against the current. I’ve always been a little weary of the herd mentality. Even when I was too young to know exactly why… watching lemmings follow each other off a cliff just made me want to go find my own cliff. (or at least one that was less crowded!)
During the summer of 1979, as I was about to enter high school… I discovered the wonderment of being in a band. It was primal and pure juvenile joy. Ahhhh… the allure of Rock-n-Roll.
It was inevitable that I would soon discover the world of punk rock.
Now Rock-n-Roll is fun, but punk is a more of an overall mindset. In those days, punk was swimming against the current. It’s not so much anymore. Not musically anyway. It wasn’t that long ago when the Green Day guys were photographed standing next to (and supporting!) John Kerry.
JOHN KERRY!!! For chrise sakes how punk rock can you possibly be hanging out with, much less supporting John Kerry?
Which coincidentally is the inspirational DNA for spirit of this site.
The spirit of rock-n-roll attitude was, is & will always be about momentum, power and punch. There’s a built in toughness that simply has to be there. You can’t be a sissy and be Rock-n-Roll simultaniously anymore than you can be wet and dry at the same time.
Add a low tolerance level for lameness and apathy along with a healthy dash of “sense of purpose”… and you’ve got punk.
One of the many observations that I have made about liberalism in general is that it’s the epitome of the herd mentality. Soundbites and mantras are put out there, consumed, repeated and believed without question. Loyalty to a candidate is not earned… it’s doctrine. In some cases, required doctrine. Just look at Hollywood. Try and read more than three pages of Rolling Stone Magazine without tripping over leftist propaganda. The majority of major universities. PBS. NPR. MTV. NBC. Major newspapers. It’s awfully hard to avoid. Especially for the impressionable 30 & under crowd.
Participants of all those communities would have you believe that they are the cutting edge, the progressive ones… those going against the grain. Swimming against the current.
But they’re not. There’s more cult-like behavior going on inside those demographics than at a Benny Hinn rally. Liberals are their own mainstream. If you’ll allow me to make a musical analogy… liberals are like Hannah Montana fans. (Sorry Miley… just an analogy. No disrespect intended)
Continuing with the analogy… conservatives would be more like the Led Zeppelin audience. As I’ve “open-mindedly” observed it (I shop at Whole Foods too, always been an avid recycler & enjoy baked tofu)
Conservatives consistently seem to be deeper thinkers, more disciplined, logical and certainly tougher.
Tougher and less whiny.
When was the last time any one’s seen or heard Ted Nugent whining about anything? I think if you ask most conservatives what annoys them most about liberals… it would be their close-minded narrow thinking and the constant whining.
That’s not the pack I’ve ever wanted to run with.
Whether you’re a student, professional or both… every campus or workplace has that core group of folks who just seem to have issues with anything and everything. Someone is always offended, inconvenienced or bothered. Manipulation is an art-form to these individuals. Don’t get me wrong, manipulation is not always a bad thing. It’s all in how & why you manipulate.
With anything comes tact, responsibility and honor. And that includes power. Some people think that power is a bad thing. And they dislike anyone who has it. I would argue that power is neither good or bad. It just is.
In good hands, it can do wondrous things. In bad hands, it can be death.
Regardless… power exists. Accept it. Some will posses power. Some will not.
I want, hope and pray that those with power (whether they earned it or inherited it) do good things. I hope those people have momentum and punch. I hope those people are logical. I hope those people are tough because power is a mega-responsibility.
And if I have a choice in the matter, I want those people to be of a conservative mindset.
As for political power… here in the States, both the Republican and Democratic parties have done little if anything to impress or inspire me. I have to laugh sometimes at the level of passion exhibited by followers of both those parties towards each other. As if either has done much to distinguish itself from the other. People plead for third-party options. Hell.. I just want anything other than Washington politics.
So I submit to you the following theory: If you consider yourself liberal, progressive, left-leaning, whatever you want to call it… one of the following is true. You are either: (pick one)
1. Innocently mis-informed or mislead. That’s OK. And understandable. There’s a shit-ton of BS flying around. TV, radio, newspapers, popular music, etc. Through discussion and debate, absolutes & logic start to become clear. Then this “social engineering” crap starts to become obvious and it sticks out like a sore thumb. You figure things out eventually on your own terms. Or maybe you don’tand just become/remain someone who is (see next bullet-point)
2. Guilty of weak and whiny tendencies. Someone who’s angry or bitter at someone(s) or something(s). That’s OK too. Just admit it and come to terms with that reality. Stop over-compensating for it by shallowly championing the oppressed and down-trodden. Those who truly do champion those causes actually act upon their compassion, do something about it and don’t draw attention to themselves.
3. You truly do believe in the Leftist/Socialist path of big government taking care of everyone and everything from the cradle to the grave. That’s OK too. There’s plenty of Che Guevara T-Shirts to go around. Just identify yourselves as who you truly are. Stop using buzzwords and code-speak. Take a lesson from Rage Against the Machine. Those four guys were/are as left as they come. But they were forthright and honest about it. Yet still they managed to rock everyone’s face off with integrity. They earned some respect. I never enjoyed disagreeing as much as “Sleep Now in the Fire”.
So if this site does anything at all, it’s a meeting spot for those of you who may feel the same. By the same token… there’s alot of you out there wasting valuable time arguing over Bush, Clinton, McCain and Obama.
I want you here too.
And unless I’m in a parallel universe, the Federal Government has been growing constantly under Washington’s watch. The guilty parties include all of those Washington yahoos in both parties.
How about all of us redirecting some of that passion and energy towards a higher overall standard for everyone. How about we stop wasting so much time arguing over outer-ring issues, get organized on the bullzeye issues and collectively get a handle on this government.
I like caribou and rain-forests as much as the next guy. And I can’t seem to recall anyone of stature who seriously gets pleasure out war. You MoveOn.org goofballs spew whatever you want, but whether you like it or not… you’re sitting at the kiddie-table of intellectual/mature debate. Aside from the weakest of lemmings… no one takes you seriously.
So maybe together we can smash some of the “Stereotype Greatest Hits.”
(start theme song now…)
Featuring all your favorites such as:
“Republican = Conservative!”
“Overturning Roe vs. Wade = Abortions Being Made Illegal!”
“It’s All About Oil!”
“Only Liberals Care About the Enviroment!”
“Seperation of Church & State Actually Exists!”
And everyone’s favorite… “If You’re Anti-Gay Marriage… You’re Anti-Gay!”
Maybe together we can clear up some misconceptions. I truly believe that the majority of you who identify yourself as “liberal” aren’t half the sissies or Marxists as the people you align yourselves with.
Maybe together we can make a difference… one sissy at a time.
(Deep breath… and lighten up.)
